The United
Methodist Church affirms that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior
of the world, and the Lord of all. We believe God reaches out with mercy
and forgiveness to those who repent of their sinfulness. Hearts can be
changed under the prompting of grace and the guidance of the Holy Sprit.
We believe
that the core of the Christian faith was revealed in Scripture,
illumined by tradition, made vivid in personal experience, and
con-firmed by reason.
The
mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ by
proclaiming the good news of God’s grace. We continue the mission of
seeking, welcoming and gathering persons into the community of the body
of Christ.
The United
Methodist Church has a long history of concern for social justice. We
send persons into the world to live lovingly and justly as servants of
Christ by healing the sick, feeding the hungry, caring for the stranger,
freeing the oppressed, and working to develop social structures that are
consistent with the gospel. |
Dear Trinity Family,
I hope you’re doing well and staying cool. As we’ve been looking forward to our 50th Anniversary Celebration on the 1 8th, I’ve heard quite a few precious memories. I’ve also heard talk about what may be in our time capsule.
One of our young church members can’t wait for us to open the time capsule. I think the novelty for him is similar to a buried treasure. As I’ve thought about our time capsule and its contents, the scripture Joshua 3-4 has come to mind. In these two chapters we find an account of when God provided a way for God’s people through the Jordan River. Afterward, God spoke through Joshua and instructed the people to take stones from the middle of the river where they’d walked. They were to take these to help them remember how God had parted the waters so that they could walk through on dry ground.
These stones may be quite similar in purpose to what we may find in our time capsule. The Israelites were instructed to pile the large stones in one place. They were to do this so that their children and their children’s children would see it and would ask what the story is behind the stones.
This month we shall discover items in our time capsule which will have our children (and some who are older yet children at heart) curious and questioning. Trinity UMC will have a chance to remember its roots. As we see different items in the time capsule, we will be reminded of how God was powerfully at work fifty years ago.
As we gather to celebrate, we will not only dig up the time capsule and tell stories relating to that, but we will also recall stories from the whole span of the last fifty years.
As we share these stories, may we praise and thank God for the work God has done. May we also prayerfully look forward to the work God will do in the coming years.
May God’s grace and peace be with you,
Pastor Jess Russell
